Does Ethan Watters Believe Culture Can Cause Mental Illness?
Ethan Watters, author of Crazy Like Us (see my commentary), was on PRI the other day (listen to the audio here). I was pleased to get a prompt response to my comments, which I’ve copied below. Go here to follow the entire discussion in the PRI science forum.

I believe that mental illness results from a combination of nutritional deficiency and developed negative thought processes. No one is born mentally ill! It is directly connected to the central nervous system. What ever the event or thought processes,it can become progressive over time. I believe that fear plays a big role in mental illness. That it is not a problem with the actual gray matter of the brain, but how people respond to life’s situations. I believe that it can be a form of hiding, covering,or grooved record responses from the hurt or pain that occurs. In a Spiritual sense, it can be influenced by evil. I believe that with proper directive corrections nutritionally and new learmed behaviors that over time, it is completely curable! Thanks for listening.
