Vegans may have to plan more carefully to make sure they’re getting the nutrients they need to stay healthy. They may have to take supplements to make sure they are getting vitamins that may be harder to get without meat in your diet, such as iron, protein, B12, and calcium.

You may have to ease yourself slowly into a plant-based diet, especially if you’re used to eating a diet that contains large amounts of meat.

If you plan to change to an exclusively vegan lifestyle, but you currently eat meat, you can transition to a plant-based diet in order to make it less of a jarring change when you stop eating meat and meat products entirely.

Of course, when making major lifestyle changes, it’s important to consult a doctor or another healthcare professional.

Also, plant-based diets and vegan diets aren’t mutually exclusive. Some vegans will heavily rely on carbohydrates or processed foods to maintain their lifestyle. That’s not necessarily the healthiest approach to a diet.
